Big Weather

Hello Virginia Beach! We are in that weird time again where everything is either too hot or too cold! August: the ending of summer and the beginning of fall.
Honestly I can’t say that I will miss these hot summer months as it makes me sweat off my lotions and want to go running for the ac in my house! But with the cold fronts moving in we have the sign of big storms reaching our doors!

Now I have been down here since I was 7 years old and when I tell you the weather gets crazy, oh my goodness. I can still remember my first big storm down here, this is when my family still lived in the military base. I was new to the area but I brought my bike out and with other kids riding I made friends easily.
They took me to the little bike track, which was just a few messed up pieces of sidewalk that older kids turned into a little track. I was having the time of my life when this strong breeze came in. It caused a pause in all the playing that was happening around me, only for a second later all the kids and older people started to move out quickly.
Now when I see people start to move quickly I moved myself home. Grabbing my bike I hauled myself to the house, seeing non dense items leave the ground and stay in the air for a long period of time freaked me out!

Once I was almost to my house, I looked into the air and saw the sun in a way I’ve never seen before. Barely covered in clouds, it looked so orange as a red lightning struck between the clouds in the gap in between the sun.
What I saw made me burst into tears trying to move my bike in the shed. When I finally got the door open to the house I could see my mother on the phone as frantic as I was.
That whole night my family slept behind the couch, trying to prepare for the worst to come. But it never did, as the morning came and we got ready for school. Everything was like the day before, rainy and a couple of pieces of trash here or there but just fine.

Virginia Beach isn’t a stranger to weather like that! And as I grow up, I see them as normal things around here. But don’t take what I say as a non concern, be aware, follow the weather news as it comes in and also from what you see around you! If something isn’t right, don’t be scared, be prepared.
Make a plan with family members, in cause of emergency. Having a game plan makes the panic fall away since you know what you and your family have coming.
Prepare a kit for emergencies: water bottles, prepare some meals that you don’t need to heat up like sandwiches and such. Charge everything that you need to communicate and keep in the know of any changes to the weather around you.
Last but not least, stay safe!!!
